Upside down Face

This painting was inspired by my usual method of keeping my sketchbook by my bed, fighting to stay awake and then waiting until my mind starts to wander before I get my idea. I was working really hard to get close values that “vibrate” between warm and cold and this idea is clearly demonstrated in the sky in the background. The concept was something that my art teacher at a local gallery explained to me after I showed him some works by John Lurie and was asking why they were so radiant/alluring. As I move forward with more of my art I plan to incorporate this idea, as it has been something that has intrigued me since starting weekly art classes in March and I feel perfecting it will bring my art to a whole new level. Overall I am very happy with the piece, as the colors are mostly under control. In my next pieces I think the depth of the skies in my work will become much more dramatic as I refine my usage of the color vibration concept . The biggest factor about perfecting the usage of color for me is that it will finally allow me to get away from the “crutch” of using a black background with stars and allow me to make convincing works that take place during any time of the day, not just night.
