Island of the Lotus Eaters
Glow Trees
When creating artwork, I'm always mindful of how mood emerges through my choices of color and contrast. Looking at two of my recent paintings, I realized the second one feels far more interesting and atmospheric, primarily because of how I leaned into darker background tones.
In my first piece, I went with a brighter, warmer palette—lots of yellows and oranges. While the colors are vibrant, they compete visually with the glowing fruits in the trees, making the scene appear somewhat flat and less engaging.
In my second piece, however, I intentionally chose deeper, darker shades of blues and purples for the background. This allowed the glowing fruits—painted in vivid oranges and yellows—to really pop, becoming the undeniable focal points of the scene. The contrast is striking and creates a sense of mystery and intrigue.
The darker tones pull viewers' eyes naturally toward the glowing fruits, inviting them to explore the scene more deeply. This approach not only adds visual depth but also gives the painting a richer emotional feel, balancing a sense of stillness and wonder.
Ultimately, this second painting reflects how deliberate contrasts, especially with darker backgrounds, can elevate the storytelling aspect of my art, making it both visually appealing and emotionally resonant.
